The secret life of moss

by Steve Brock on February 29, 2012

Travel makes you more aware of the things you stop noticing at home.

So, rather than waiting for my next trip, I wanted to start practicing paying better attention to what’s around me daily. Living in the wet Pacific Northwest, one thing I see virtually every day but rarely notice is moss. It’s like a wet, spongy weed here.

Moss, lichen and similar green growing things have their own unique beauty like tropical or primeval forests on a minature scale…if you pay attention and get close enough to notice.

That’s exactly what I’m starting to do and here are some of the results. I’ll keep updating this over time, so be sure to check back for more.

Steve, I took the time to enlarge each photo. It is breathtaking photography. My driveway is covered in moss this time of year. I am going to look for the small art pieces in our local moss, more closely. And, the larger patterns, too, like in the stripes up the trunk of a tree you show above. Who knows what God may be teaching me. Yes, paying attention is always good.

Thanks, Cathie. You can almost treat it as a Rorschach test as to what you see. I’ll explain a bit more in the next entry how I’m using it, but if nothing else, just getting each of us to notice something so common has value. Take some pics of your driveway and share them!

I find you blog on moss strangely starting to grow on me. Sorry, that’s what passes for humor here in Texas.

Congrats on making the “100 Reasons To Travel” list by Trip Logic – http://goo.gl/7yH6Q.

As a fairly new blogger, I was pleased to make the list as well (# 16). If you have a moment, check out my admittedly quirky travel blog at http://www.travelbyterry.com. It’s a fun read, or meant to be at least. ;0)

Actually, that passes for humor up here in Washington where the moss starts to feel as if it literally is growing on you. Thanks for comment and the heads up. I checked out both the Trip Logic blog (great list and didn’t even realize I’d been included) and yours as well. I can definitely relate to the intergenerational travel posts as we’ve done several such trips and your last tip on scheduling anything the night before an early flight would definitely result in a rebellion in our family! Check out the Tips for Intergenerational Travel in the Tips and Tools section at the top of this page for some additional tips you can add to your list (that don’t involve Carlos).

Anyway, thanks for checking in and keep up the good work on your blog.
