Traveling in another's shoes…sort of

by Steve Brock on July 14, 2011

A few weeks ago we looked at the idea of vicarious meaning. In that case, I learned to appreciate my dad from the way others treated him while fishing in Yellowstone.

Today, I want to give you the opportunity to explore vicarious travel.

My friend Elisa Morgan is about to embark on a trip. And she’s inviting others to join her…vicariously.

Elisa is the President Emerita of MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) and the author of what seems like a zillion books including She Did What She Could. If you have ever wondered what difference you can make in this world, you need to read this book.

As just one of the many things Elisa is up to these days, she’s been invited to go with the ONE Campaign on a trip to Kenya for a week. Elisa’s an insightful person who gets the idea of meaningful travel (I’ll post an interview with her on the subject in the near future). This will be a new experience for her and for that reason, I encourage you to travel with her vicariously and learn as she learns from her journey.

The focus is on moms, but any of us can glean understanding from the travel experiences of others. That’s one of the wonders of meaningful travel.

Here’s the invitation from Elisa herself:

This summer for one week, July 23 to July 30, I’ll be traveling with ONE and 9 other women to Kenya to experience first-hand the issues women – especially moms—face and bring this awareness back home. The women ONE is taking are women from all kinds of perspectives – all moms who care about their own kids and about the world in which they raise them. I am honored to be included.

What is ONE? ONE is a non-partisan advocacy organization that fights extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa. Backed by more than 2.5 million members, it works with government leaders to support proven, cost-effective solutions to save lives and help build sustainable futures. One doesn’t want your money – in fact can’t accept it. But it does want your voice.

You can come along to Kenya with me — as a participant in ONE Week. I’d like to ask you to take two steps:

  1. Become a ONE mom. Click here to add your voice. <> If you’re not a mom – okay! Become a ONE member. <>
  2. Participate in ONE Week. Here’s how:

I’m looking for compassionate, caring people – women specifically – to journey with me and to spread the word of what life is like for other women and families just like our own in Africa. Not everyone is either called or is able to travel to Africa, but through daily email updates personally from me as well as other moms on the trip, you can follow our journey, meet the people we meet, and experience it all. By participating you will receive a trip agenda to tag along with us, have the opportunity to hear from ONE experts on key issues we will be learning about, and follow us as we chronicle each step of our journey on Twitter, Facebook, and the ONE Blog. Also, If you’re not already a member, sign up for the FREE Weekly ReFill from <> and you’ll receive personal messages straight from me.

So check it out and follow Elisa and others on their journey. You never know what you might discover through the travels of others.

If you found this interesting, why don't you share it with others?
